“Two personalities await us.” That is what they say about Cimetière de Morsang-sur-Seine. This small cemetery holds stories of bravery and intellect.

Cimetière de Morsang-sur-Seine may seem like any other resting place. But look closer. It is the final home to remarkable individuals who shaped French history.

Here lies Michel Carage a Companion of the Liberation. Born in 1921 Carage was a student at ESSEC. He journeyed to England after the Armistice announcement. As an officer in the 2nd Armored Division, he fought for France’s liberation. Sadly Carage was wounded in December 1944. His courage earned him a place in history and here in Cimetière de Morsang-sur-Seine.

Another notable figure buried here is Georges Izard. Born in 1903 Izard was an academician. He trained as a lawyer. Izard served as a cabinet director in several ministries. In 1936 he entered politics. He was elected deputy for the SFIO. During the war Izard joined the Resistance. By 1944 he became a member of the Provisional Consultative Assembly. Later he joined the constituent assembly.

In June 1945 Izard helped found the UDSR. He served as its deputy secretary-general. He then became president of the Democratic and Socialist Movement for the United States of Europe. Izard later returned to law. He defended high-profile cases. These included Kravtchenko against Les Lettres françaises and Claudel against Maurras. He also represented the Bey of Tunis and the Sultan of Morocco during decolonization crises. Other clients included the Rothschild family Daniel Wildenstein François Mitterrand and L’Express. He even served as the lawyer for writer Jacques Chardonne.

Izard was an intellectual deeply involved in his time. With Emmanuel Mounier Louis-Émile Galey and others he founded the journal Esprit. In 1971 Georges Izard was elected to the Académie Française.

On a personal note Izard married Catherine Daniélou in 1929. She was the daughter of Minister Daniélou. Catherine was also the sister of Jean and Alain Daniélou. She rests here with him in Cimetière de Morsang-sur-Seine. Together they were parents to television producer Christophe Izard.
