The town of Longpont-sur-Orge has a rich past. It was once known as Longpont-sous-Montlhéry. The name changed in 1951. Longpont’s story is closely linked to its abbey and priory. Montlhéry was the fief. Longpont-sous-Montlhéry was its spiritual heart.
Longpont-sur-Orge has seen kings of France walk its grounds. Louis VI and VII walked here. Philippe le Bel, Philippe de Valois and Charles VIII also visited Longpont. Louis of France died here in 1319. He was the son of Philippe le Hardi.
The basilica Notre-Dame de Bonne-Garde is a key landmark. It was once the abbey of Benedictine monks. Construction began in 1031. Guy I and Hodierne requested monks from Cluny. Twenty-two monks arrived in Longpont around 1061. They were led by Abbot Robert.
The priory declined over time. The Revolution forced the last monks out. It was sold as national property. The priory was demolished but General Barrois saved the abbey from demolition. Reconstruction began in 1875. It was thanks to Abbot Arthaud. Pope Pius X made the church a basilica. It became Notre-Dame de Bonne-Garde.
