Tucked away on the heights of La Rochette, overlooking the bustling city of Lyon, lies the tranquil Cimetière de Cuire. This isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a place where the stories of Caluire-et-Cuire come to rest. The Cimetière de Cuire isn’t as large or as famous as its counterpart down the hill, the Cimetière de Caluire. But it holds a unique charm, a quiet dignity that whispers tales of the past. Originally, Cuire had its own cemetery, located lower down the slopes. However, in 1805, the prefect decreed its closure, ordering all burials to take place at the Cimetière de Caluire. So, while the current Cimetière de Cuire is a relatively recent addition to the landscape, it carries the weight of centuries of Cuire’s history. As you wander through the Cimetière de Cuire, you’ll notice the strong Catholic influence in the iconography adorning the tombs. Many feature larves, grimacing faces perched atop the corners of the monuments. These figures, inspired by Roman antiquity, were believed to guard the ashes of the deceased. Their presence adds a touch of macabre fascination to the serene setting. One particular monument stands out. The Bouvard family tomb, a striking example of Hispano-Moresque architecture, designed by the architect Marcoz. This unique tomb, with its graceful columns, domed roof, and melancholic angel sculpted by Milanese artist Bottinello, commemorates the young Julie Alexandrine Bouvard, who passed away at only 28 years old. Her statue is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life, amidst the enduring stones of the Cimetière de Cuire. The Cimetière de Cuire isn’t just a place of mourning. It’s a living archive, a testament to the lives and stories of the people who shaped Caluire-et-Cuire. It is a quiet space for reflection, high above the city, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of local history.
