Whispers from the stones of Cimetière Saint-Pierre greet you. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s Marseille’s largest necropolis the third largest in all of France. Sixty-three hectares of history lie before you a sprawling testament to lives lived and legacies left behind.

Cimetière Saint-Pierre wasn’t always here. Before 1856 burials happened within the city even inside churches. The 18th century brought change. Doctors warned of the dangers of urban burials. An ordinance banned church burials. Marseille needed a new cemetery a solution to overcrowding and health concerns.

The city acquired land creating Cimetière Saint-Charles. But it quickly proved insufficient. The expanding city and new railway lines surrounded it. So a new and larger cemetery was born from the gardens of several old country houses. Sixte Rey masterminded its design. This new resting place Cimetière Saint-Pierre opened in 1855. The transfer of remains from the old Saint-Charles cemetery took years lasting until 1863.

Note the sculpture of a woman holding a painter’s palette. Nearby is Auguste Carli’s L’Envol a breathtaking sculpture of ascension. Don’t miss Gaby Deslys’s tomb her marble column adorned with flowers and a sculpted medallion.

Venture west. The pines of carré 6 hold a pantheon of notable Marseillais. See Alphonse Esquiros’s marble column topped with his sculpted bust. Discover Allar’s magnificent bas-relief L’âme à Dieu. Find the tomb of painter Raphaël Ponson. Note the medallion of his son. The tomb of mime Louis Rouffe stands out its marble column featuring a Pierrot mask. Nearby is the tomb of Jean-Baptiste Rolland de Kessang explorer of the Malay Peninsula his tomb adorned with sculpted birds. Lastly note the tomb of Émile Loubon.
