Curious how an archipelago transformed into a university campus? Cidade Universitária is more than just buildings. It is a testament to Brazilian innovation.
Cidade Universitária sits on Fundão Island. It is in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The island itself is artificial. It was created by landfill. The neighborhood is known as Ilha do Fundão. This is the island’s name.
Imagine this island’s past. From 1865 to 1940, one of its parts served as Rio’s main garbage dump. That area is now home to the university’s Rectory. It also houses the Technology Park and Vila Residencial.
In 1949, President Getúlio Vargas ordered the construction of the campus. This project reshaped the area between 1949 and 1952. Eight islands became one. These included Ilha do Bom Jesus da Coluna. It now hosts the Technology Center. Also included was Ilha do Fundão. It is now home to the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital.
Cidade Universitária boasts a large area. It spans over five million square meters. Despite being on an island, it has two beaches. They are called Catalão and Quartel. Swimming is not allowed.
The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro or UFRJ dominates the landscape. It hosts the reitoria and most of the university units. Also, Cidade Universitária houses a significant technology park. It includes companies like FMC Technologies and Halliburton. These companies conduct advanced research here.
Several research centers thrive here. They include the Leopoldo Américo Miguez de Mello Research Center of Petrobras. Another is the Electric Energy Research Center of Eletrobrás.
Cidade Universitária fosters innovation. The Mineral Technology Center and the Brazilian Center for Physics Research also call it home. General Electric has a Global Technology Center here.
Partnerships drive more innovation. Usiminas, Schlumberger, and IBM collaborate with the university. They establish research centers on the island. The goal is to become a conventional neighborhood.
The Ponte do Saber connects the island to the rest of Rio. This bridge symbolizes knowledge. Cidade Universitária blends education and enterprise.
Today, Cidade Universitária continues to evolve. It is becoming a hub. More than 200 small to medium-sized companies are joining. They add high technological value. From a landfill to a university campus, this is a place of transformation.
