Right here, in front of us, stands a grand old building, a silent witness to Chicago’s vibrant history. This is the CIBC Theatre, a landmark that has changed names and hosted a kaleidoscope of entertainment over the past century. The building was originally known as the Majestic Theatre and opened its doors on New Year’s Day in 1906. In its early days, the theatre hosted vaudeville acts, which were popular live performances that included comedies, music and acrobatics. It was a popular destination in Chicago, attracting audiences from all walks of life. It even served as the start of several touring Broadway shows. But during the Great Depression, the theatre closed its doors and remained silent for 13 years. The theatre was reopened in 1945 as the Sam Shubert Theatre, and over the decades, hosted several noteworthy productions, from musicals like “Gypsy” and “Oliver” to plays like “Guys and Dolls.” It was a busy time. In 2005, it closed for renovations. The building went under a multi-million dollar restoration, and it reopened as the LaSalle Bank Theatre, later becoming the Bank of America Theatre. In 2017, it finally became the CIBC Theatre, under the ownership of the Canadian bank CIBC, reflecting the changing times and evolving trends in the city. The CIBC Theatre has stood the test of time, continuing to entertain audiences for over a century, a testament to its inherent charm, classic architecture, and enduring legacy.
