Can a church embody both light and darkness? Right here, before the Church Universal and Triumphant, that question hangs heavy in the air. The Church Universal and Triumphant emerged from the ashes of Mark Prophet’s Summit Lighthouse in 1975. Elizabeth Clare Prophet, his widow, declared herself the messenger, claiming divine guidance from ascended masters. The Church Universal and Triumphant blended Christianity, Buddhism, and Theosophy, attracting thousands with its promise of spiritual liberation and ascension. Elizabeth Clare Prophet, often called “Mother” or “Guru Ma,” became a prominent figure in the New Age movement. Her books, published by the church’s own Summit University Press, sold over a million copies. Her message reached millions more through public access television. However, lurking beneath the surface of spiritual optimism was a growing fear of impending doom. The Church Universal and Triumphant warned of a “Capitalist-Communist Conspiracy,” of dark forces and imminent nuclear war. This fear propelled the church toward a survivalist strategy. In the 1980s, the Church Universal and Triumphant moved its headquarters to the Royal Teton Ranch in Montana. This sprawling property, nestled near Yellowstone National Park, became a refuge. It also became a staging ground for the church’s apocalyptic preparations. Members built fallout shelters, stockpiled supplies, and even acquired weapons. The Church Universal and Triumphant’s apocalyptic prophecies reached a fever pitch in 1990. Prophet warned of an impending nuclear attack, prompting thousands of followers to seek refuge in the shelters. The predicted attack never came. This unfulfilled prophecy shook the church to its core. Many members left, disillusioned and questioning their faith. The Church Universal and Triumphant struggled to regain its footing. Prophet’s health declined. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The church, once a vibrant community, fractured into smaller factions. The story of the Church Universal and Triumphant is a complex one. It’s a tale of spiritual seeking and apocalyptic fears. It is a testament to the power of belief, and the fragility of faith when prophecy fails. The echoes of those turbulent years still linger here. As you stand before this quiet building, can you sense the weight of those unfulfilled prophecies, the hopes and fears of a community bracing for the end?
