Imagine the bustling Penang Channel, a key trading hub rivaling Singapore. Records from 1879 reveal over 1,000 vessels navigating these waters in a single day. Church Street Pier witnessed this vibrant maritime activity. The late 20th century brought a decline in trade. This led to the closure of several piers, including Church Street Pier. Urban decay further threatened the waterfront’s future. The early 2000s saw a revival effort. The Malaysian federal government transformed Church Street Pier into the Tanjong City Marina in 2005. This state-of-the-art marina could accommodate up to 140 yachts and catamarans. It initially attracted yachting enthusiasts from Southeast Asia. Sadly, by 2011, the marina’s floating structures deteriorated. Tanjong City Marina was abandoned, its berths reclaimed by the sea. Today, Church Street Pier offers a different kind of allure. Visitors can still capture stunning photographs of the pier and its surroundings. A dining area provides refreshments after a leisurely stroll. Swimming and fishing are prohibited.
