What kind of bridge needs a 0.6-meter height adjustment? Let me introduce you to the Church Street Bridge. This grand dame, with her graceful arches spanning the Yarra River, has a history as intriguing as her architecture. Designed by Harold Desbrowe Annear, a prominent figure in Australia’s Arts and Crafts movement, the Church Street Bridge opened in 1923. She replaced an earlier iron girder bridge, a relic of the Crimean War, brought all the way from Britain! But back to our height-challenged friend. You see, in the 1960s, progress came knocking in the form of the South Eastern Arterial. This new road ran right beneath the Church Street Bridge, and let’s just say, things got a little cramped. So, in the 1990s, during the CityLink project, engineers performed a delicate architectural surgery. They replaced a section of the bridge’s arch, giving it that extra 0.6 meters of clearance. You’d think such a procedure would leave a scar, but the Church Street Bridge wears her history with grace. Still standing strong, she continues to connect Richmond and South Yarra, a timeless testament to Melbourne’s ever-evolving landscape.
