A floating church. Can you imagine? The Je Sers isn’t just any chapel it’s a church on a barge a unique testament to faith and resilience. Right here on the Quai de la Republique in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine you stand before a remarkable piece of history.

Originally built in 1919 as a coal barge named Langemark this vessel bore witness to the horrors of World War I. The name Langemark a Belgian town near Ypres remembered the first use of mustard gas a chilling reminder of war’s devastating impact. After the war its purpose changed dramatically. In 1936 the barge was purchased by the Entraide Sociale Bateliere a social outreach organization. Abbot Joseph Bellanger renamed it Je Sers meaning I serve. The Bishop of Versailles himself blessed the transformed barge. This act of blessing marked its conversion into a chapel-boat a beacon of hope for the bargemen and women of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine.

The Je Sers is more than just a place of worship. It houses a meeting room locker room and a food bank providing essential services to the river community and those ashore. At its center is a reception area showcasing the history of waterway transport. The front features a beautiful chapel bathed in the soft glow of a glass-block dome. It’s a poignant symbol of faith amidst the bustling waterways. Its size is impressive 70.26 meters long 8.10 meters wide. This immense barge once carried coal now carries the weight of faith and community support.

Today the Je Sers continues to serve its original purpose offering spiritual guidance to bargemen. It also extends its helping hand to those less fortunate. Since 2014 it’s even provided refuge and care for Tibetan refugees. This floating church is a place where history faith and charity intertwine creating a truly unique and inspiring space. It stands as a reminder of the enduring human spirit and the transformative power of compassion.

As you reflect upon the history of this extraordinary barge-chapel remember the countless lives it has touched the unwavering faith it represents and the enduring legacy of service it embodies.
