Tucked away in the bustling cityscape, the Church of the Transfiguration whispers stories of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to the faith and resilience of a community. The Church of the Transfiguration, nestled in what was once the tiny village of Bowmanville, began its journey in 1911. Imagine a landscape of prairies, modest homes, and the sprawling Budlong farms, famous for their onions. This was the setting for the birth of the Church of the Transfiguration. Polish immigrants, seeking a new life in America, formed the heart of Bowmanville. They yearned for a spiritual home, a place where their language and traditions were embraced. Initially, they attended St. Matthias Church, but the language barrier proved challenging. Some traveled long distances to other Polish churches, but the dream of their own parish persisted. Their prayers were answered when Archbishop Quigley assigned Father Francis Wojciechowski to establish a new church. The Church of the Transfiguration held its first mass in the Budlong School hall on August 23, 1911. Land was acquired, and on December 8th, the cornerstone was laid for a combined church and school building. Construction progressed, and on July 14, 1912, Archbishop Quigley returned to dedicate the completed structure. The Great Depression brought hardship, forcing the parish to sell half its property to keep its doors open. The Church of the Transfiguration persevered, adapting to the changing times. Today, the Church of the Transfiguration serves a diverse community. It continues to be a beacon of faith and a testament to the enduring spirit of Bowmanville. It’s the only parish in Chicago offering services in Filipino/Tagalog, reflecting the ever-evolving tapestry of its congregation. The Church of the Transfiguration is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the power of faith, community, and resilience.
