In 1971, the Church of the Risen Christ opened its doors to the burgeoning Catholic community in Toa Payoh. This vibrant neighborhood, once a sprawling swamp, transformed into a bustling residential area. The Church of the Risen Christ became a spiritual anchor for the growing population. The initial name, Church of the Resurrection, felt too abstract. So it was changed to the Church of the Risen Christ, emphasizing a more personal connection to the core of Easter beliefs. This church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community hub. Initially, services were held in community centers. Then, thanks to government land allocation and the tireless fundraising efforts of Fathers Pierre Abrial and Adrian Anthony, the church building became a reality. They raised an impressive $450,000. This was a testament to the community’s dedication. The Church of the Risen Christ was designed with practicality in mind. Its architecture is simple, yet elegant. The church focuses on humble devotion rather than ornate decoration. Later additions included a serene grotto honoring the Virgin Mary. This became a cherished spot for prayer and reflection. Inside, the absence of elaborate stained glass or towering statues is striking. The church’s beauty lies in its simplicity. The focus remains on the passionate singing and the deep faith of its parishioners. The Church of the Risen Christ has a rich musical tradition. The renowned Peter Low Choir called this church home from 1970 to 2002. They even performed for the Pope at Saint Peter’s Square. Today, the church boasts two Allen Digital Pipe Organs. These instruments enhance the liturgical music and provide a powerful spiritual experience. The Church of the Risen Christ has always been at the forefront of community service. It was a pioneer in offering free health services and legal clinics to the poor, regardless of their religious affiliation.
