“Do the saints care about All Saints’ Day?” That question echoed in my ears as I stood before the Church of the Holy Cross. This wasn’t just any church. It was a place steeped in history a place of quiet strength and vibrant faith.

The Church of the Holy Cross stands tall in Clementi. Its construction was completed in 1980. Archbishop Gregory Yong presided over its official opening on May 1st 1980. Before this magnificent building existed a smaller chapel served the community. This chapel was located along Holland Road. It belonged to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. As Clementi grew the chapel became too small. This led to the construction of the present church. Father Nicolas Chia oversaw the building’s construction. He would later become Archbishop Nicholas Chia. Interestingly this was Archbishop William Goh’s first posting after his ordination.

The church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith. It serves a parish community of approximately 8000 people. Its recent renovation included a beautiful updated Marian Grotto. Tucked away is the cenacle also known as the adoration room. The name cenacle means Upper Room. It’s a space for prayer echoing the Last Supper setting. A small but significant relic is housed within the church. It’s believed to be a fragment of the True Cross. The authenticity of such relics is debated. But its power is in connecting believers across time and space.

The Church of the Holy Cross stands as a beacon of hope. A place of worship and community. It reflects the growth of Clementi from a military camp to a thriving town. It carries the history of faith within its walls. It reminds us of the enduring human connection to spirituality. So remember the story of the Church of the Holy Cross. Remember the faith it represents. Remember that you too are called to be a saint.
