How did a church end up with such an unusual name as the Church of the Blessed Sacrament? Right here in the heart of Islington, this seemingly unassuming church boasts a history as rich as its name. Built in 1916 by Robert Leabon Curtis, the Church of the Blessed Sacrament was initially a much smaller structure. Funded by the devout James J. Hicks, the church’s “domestic-looking” facade was designed to blend into the residential area. The Church of the Blessed Sacrament wasn’t always this size though. In the 1950s, it underwent a major expansion, more than doubling its capacity thanks to the work of Thomas G. Birchall Scott, son of a notable diocesan surveyor. However, fate had other plans. Structural issues in the 1990s led to the demolition of the newer sections, returning the church to a semblance of its original size. Today, the Church of the Blessed Sacrament stands as a testament to both its architect’s vision and the ebb and flow of time, a silent sentinel to the ever-changing face of London.
