A cornfield. That’s where it all began. The Church of St Raphael in Crystal Minnesota wasn’t always the majestic structure you see before you. After World War II the area experienced incredible growth. Archbishop John Gregory Murray saw the need for a new church. He appointed Father Thomas Fenelon. The first mass was held in July 1951 in a school.
The Church of St Raphael wasn’t built overnight. First a school was constructed. Then a rectory served as a temporary chapel. Imagine the small gatherings. The anticipation building for a proper church. This temporary setup lasted almost nine years. The school’s gymnasium hosted Sunday masses.
Finally in March 1960 ground was broken. The current church rectory and offices took shape. Archbishop William O Brady dedicated the Church of St Raphael on July 9 1961. A significant milestone for the growing community. The church quickly became a vital part of Crystal. It served over 3000 families by 1980.
The Church of St Raphael wasn’t content to stand still. In 1991 a large addition was added. This expansion included offices meeting rooms and a reception hall. This shows the church’s commitment to serving its ever-growing congregation. The Church of St Raphael continues to serve thousands of parishioners. It’s a testament to the faith and dedication of the community.
However the history of the Church of St Raphael isn’t without shadows. A lawsuit in 1989 revealed accusations of sexual misconduct. This involved two priests Father Robert Kapoun and Father Joseph Wajda. The allegations highlight the importance of addressing such issues within the church and society. The Church of St Raphael like many institutions has faced challenges. Its ongoing work is vital. The building stands as a place of worship community and a reminder of the complexities of history.
