What if a church could gaze lovingly upon its mother? That’s the unique relationship embodied right here at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Dallas. We are standing before a testament to faith. It has evolved beautifully over time.
Let’s step back to the spring of 1872. The first Mass of St. Mary’s Parish wasn’t in a grand building. It was in a simple Sherman hotel room. Just three years later, a small chapel appeared at Travis Street and Eagle Lane. This was followed by a frame church dedicated to St. Mary.
Then, in 1905, a significant chapter began. Construction started on a new church. Nicholas Clayton was the renowned Texas architect behind its design. By 1906, the structure was complete. For 103 years, it served the parish.
The area’s population grew significantly over time. To accommodate this growth, a new church was built in 2009. It honored St. Anne. This new church sits across the street from the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. The placement allows the mother and daughter to seemingly look upon each other with love. Both churches continue to offer solace to those seeking God.
Since that humble Mass in 1872, prayers have continuously risen from St. Mary’s Parish. Generations have lived, worked, and loved within these walls. Parishioners echo the Psalmist’s words “How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, God of hosts.”
Alongside the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin stands St. Mary’s Catholic School. It was founded in 1877. The Sisters of St. Mary of Namur named it St. Joseph’s Academy. They arrived in Sherman to provide Catholic education. St. Mary’s School is the oldest Catholic elementary school in the Diocese of Dallas. It maintains excellent academic and moral training. Today’s teachers follow the Sisters’ commitment to excellence.
From that hotel room, the parish has come far. The journey is measured in years, talent, and treasure. Parishioners have expressed their faith together. The parish and school continue to grow. Over 2,000 people attend Sunday Masses each weekend. St. Mary’s School has nearly 170 students. The Sunday morning religious formation program instructs over 500 children.
The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin thrives as a robust community of faith. It is dedicated to listening to God’s Word and living it daily. Numerous organizations, study groups, and charitable programs show the people’s spirit. This is more than just a building. It is a vibrant testament to faith and community.
