Haven’t you noticed the silver cross atop the Church of Saint Francis Xavier’s elegant bell tower? The Church of Saint Francis Xavier stands as a beacon of faith in Serangoon Gardens. This Roman Catholic parish has a rich history. It has touched the lives of thousands.

In the 1950s, this area was planned to house British military personnel. Around 15000 people called it home. Archbishop Olçomendy recognized the need for a place of worship. In 1957, he purchased a 5-acre plot of land. This land would house the Church of Saint Francis Xavier and a primary school. The Infant Jesus Sisters managed the school.

Father Philippe Meisonnier led the church building efforts. He visited people every evening. He carried his trademark fabric bag. He made personal appeals for funds. His dedication and the community’s generosity made the church a reality.

On January 11, 1959, Archbishop Olçomendy blessed the new Church of Saint Francis Xavier. Father Rene Challet became its first parish priest. In 1964, the first Parish Council formed. It acted as an advisory body. The original parish boundary centered on Serangoon Garden Estate. It extended to Braddell Heights and other areas.

Over the years, the Church of Saint Francis Xavier expanded its reach. In the 1970s, areas were designated to the Church of St Vincent de Paul. Areas in Ang Mo Kio New Town were divided between the Church of the Holy Spirit and St Francis Xavier Church.

In 1977, the Parish Social Centre was built. It provided religious education for youth. Adults could meet and bond there. A play school and kindergarten classes began in 1978. Church members visited the Cheshire Home in 1979. They brought residents to mass on Sundays.

Father John Sim led several renovation projects from 1993 to 2004. These projects provided a new canteen and an expanded church. They also built a new parish center. The Church of Saint Francis Xavier was a pilgrimage church during the Great Jubilee year of 1999 to 2000.

The Church of Saint Francis Xavier was designed with classical influences. It has repetitive structural arches. These arches define the main building. The bell tower adds to its elegance. It is topped with a distinctive silver cross.

The Church of Saint Francis Xavier has undergone many renovations. In 1997, a major upgrade cost $2.9 million. The original structure was rebuilt and renovated. Modern furnishings like air-conditioning were added. A mural of St Francis Xavier was added. It was set in stained glass. It extended across the facade.

Originally meant for 1000 people, the church accommodated 2000 in its early years. Today, the Church of Saint Francis Xavier serves 5000 Catholics. In 2019, a rejuvenation project began. It cost an estimated $6.8 million. The refreshed premises cater to the growing number of parishioners.
