Founded in 1889 by Reverend William Christian in Wrightsville Arkansas, the Church of the Living God C.W.F.F. is a non-denominational organization. Christian’s vision emerged from a divergence of opinion within his former Baptist church. His commitment to scriptural doctrine led him to establish this new spiritual home.
Originally, Christian intended to name it Christian’s Friendship Work. Divine inspiration guided him to name it Church of the Living God. Early key members included Elder K. C. Adams, who became the first National Secretary.
The Church of the Living God emphasizes baptism by immersion. It uses water and unleavened bread in the Lord’s Supper. Foot washing is also practiced when one unites with the church.
Local congregations are called Temples. They are governed by a general assembly. The presiding officer is known as the chief bishop. The ministry includes various roles such as bishops and pastors.
In 1895, disagreements led to a split. Both groups retained the name Church of the Living God. Only temples using the motto C.W.F.F. are identified as part of the original brotherhood.
Many breakaways have occurred. However, the Church of the Living God Brotherhood remains the parent body. This organization remains non-denominational.
