On a crisp autumn day in 1984, President Gordon B. Hinckley stood before a newly completed edifice in Dallas. He declared the Church of Jesus Christ temple the most significant building in Texas. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had finally planted its most sacred roots in the Lone Star State. The Dallas Texas Temple, a gleaming structure of marble and slate, became the first of its kind in Texas. Its six spires, each crowned with the golden statue of the angel Moroni, reached towards the heavens. This wasn’t just another church for Sunday worship. This was a temple, a place reserved for the highest sacraments of the Latter-day Saints faith. The Church of Jesus Christ’s presence in Texas, however, stretches back much further than 1984. The story begins decades earlier, in the mid-1800s. Joseph Smith, the first president of the Church of Jesus Christ, had even considered Texas as a refuge from persecution in Illinois. While that plan never materialized, Lyman Wight, a Mormon apostle, led a group of followers to Texas in 1845. They established Zodiac, a thriving community near Fredericksburg. The Church of Jesus Christ experienced growth and setbacks over the following years. Missionaries spread the faith, and converts journeyed to Utah. The small town of Kelsey became a hub for Latter-day Saints. By 1984, the Church of Jesus Christ in Texas had grown substantially, culminating in the dedication of the Dallas Texas Temple. The temple’s construction wasn’t without its challenges. It stirred controversy among some local religious leaders. Yet, the open house, attended by thousands, helped bridge divides and correct misconceptions. The Church of Jesus Christ’s dedication to community service, evident in their response to disasters like Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, further solidified their place in Texas. Today, the Dallas Texas Temple stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the Latter-day Saints. It’s a symbol of their commitment to family, community, and their unique spiritual journey. The Church of Jesus Christ continues to thrive in Texas, with almost 270,000 members and a growing number of congregations.
