Haven’t you ever wondered about the story behind that unassuming building on 8th Avenue? That’s the Golden Gate Church of Christ. It is a place with a surprisingly rich history. The Golden Gate Church of Christ started humbly in the mid-1930s. The congregation initially rented worship spaces. Various preachers rotated as ministers.
Eventually, the church found a permanent home. They purchased a corner lot at 8th Avenue and Cabrillo Street. This is in San Francisco’s Richmond District. The church then built its own building. It stands at 701-8th Avenue near Golden Gate Park. The Golden Gate Church of Christ was officially established on August 27, 1937. Imagine the dedication it took to build this community. Today, the Golden Gate Church of Christ celebrates over 86 years of history.
The 1950s marked a golden era for the Golden Gate Church of Christ. The congregation selected and installed elders and deacons. These leaders helped guide the church. Historical documents reveal the church’s global reach. The Golden Gate Church of Christ supported mission work in Mexico, the Philippines, and Europe.
A special connection existed between San Francisco and the Philippines. Minutes from an October 5, 1952, elders meeting mention contributions to Philippine and Mexican missions. Ralph Brashears, a missionary, started the Philippine mission work. He also founded the Philippine Bible College in Tayug, Pangasinan.
In 1976, Virginia Jimenez Madlaing and her husband Art Gabot Madlaing joined the Golden Gate Church of Christ. They brought their young daughters Darlene Vi and Wynema Joy. Minister Bonner served as preacher at that time. Morgan Taylor later succeeded him. Other ministers include Atty Paul Love, Silbano Garcia, Eli Quesada, and James Quitoriano. James Quitoriano is the current and longest-serving minister.
On August 29, 2004, the Golden Gate Church of Christ installed four elders. Paul Methvin installed Darryl C Darden, Odelle B Lee, Kaan Y Chin, and Art Gabot Madlaing. Sadly, the eldership dissolved when three elders moved away.
Today, the Golden Gate Church of Christ continues its outreach. They host MY ANGEL RADIO San Francisco every Saturday. This program reaches local and global audiences. The church also hosted a Soul Winners Workshop. Jon and Razzle Rowe led the workshop. They used the WE CARE approach to share the gospel.
The Golden Gate Church of Christ supports a books ministry. Terry Denis, John Jeffry, and Art Gabot Madlaing jointly initiated it. They publish and market books through Amazon.
The Golden Gate Church of Christ extends an open invitation. You can reach out for prayer requests or share a praise report. The church offers Bible studies for those interested. They welcome anyone who wishes to join their congregation. Services are held in both English and Spanish. English services are both in person and virtual. Spanish services are in person only.
