Once, three became one. That’s the story of Chu Sheng Temple. This is no ordinary temple. It is a testament to unity and history.
Chu Sheng Temple stands here in Ang Mo Kio. It represents the merging of three older temples. These temples once thrived in the villages of Yio Chu Kang. Redevelopment in the late 1970s threatened them. They chose to combine their strengths. In 1981, Chu Sheng Temple was built.
But why combine? What were these original temples? They were Ji Fu Gong, Hua Tang Fu, and Long Quan Yan. Each had its own unique story. Ji Fu Gong served Hokkien and Teochew villagers. Hua Tang Fu housed the statue of Shi Fu Wang Ye. Long Quan Yan held the statue of Fa Zu Sheng Jun.
Look closely at the temple’s design. Notice the traditional Hokkien architectural style. The roof ridges have a distinct curve. This reflects the heritage of most worshippers.
Chu Sheng Temple means “Temple where deities gather”. It is a fitting name. Inside, you will find many deities. There is Shi Fu Wang Ye and Lord Lin. Also, Lord Xiao and Zhu Fu Da Ren reside here. Other deities include Dong Gong Zhenren. Do not forget Qingshui Zu Shi. You can also find Fu De Zheng Shen known as Tua Pek Kong.
But Chu Sheng Temple is more than a place of worship. It is a community hub. Former villagers gather here often. The temple actively engages in community work. They give red packets to the needy. This is a tradition that continues today.
The temple has a rich history of serving the community. In 1983, it established a welfare group. Each year, they distribute festive funds. These go to needy residents during Chinese New Year. The temple also set up a bursary. It supports students from poor families. They also donate to community and charity groups.
Interestingly, Chu Sheng Temple even has a herbal garden. It is one of the few temples with one. The garden offers free medicinal herbs to residents. This tradition dates back over 20 years. It recalls a time when deities healed villagers with herbs.
Notice the grand牌楼 or decorated archway outside. The archway once had an opening ceremony supported by Mr. Wang Dingchang. He was a minister at that time.
In 1990, the temple underwent a significant upgrade. It was rebuilt into a three-story modern temple. This ensured it could serve future generations.
Chu Sheng Temple continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing needs of the community. Renovations in 2011 gave the temple a fresh look.
Remember Chu Sheng Temple. It is not just bricks and mortar. It embodies community, history, and faith. It is where deities and people gather. It is a beacon of hope in Ang Mo Kio.
