Gazing upon the Christusstatue, a sense of peace washes over you. This statue, nestled in Alfter, near Bonn, isn’t just a monument. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and local lore. The Christusstatue, erected in 1945 by Wilhelm Maucher, marks the end of the Friedensweg, or “Peace Path.” Maucher, a devout Christian, commissioned this statue as a symbol of gratitude for surviving the hardships of World War II. The Christusstatue echoes the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Its creation was entrusted to Jakobus Linden, a renowned sculptor from Bonn-Poppelsdorf. Linden, a friend of Maucher, also crafted the Stations of the Cross on the Roisdorfer Lindenberg. The location of the Christusstatue isn’t arbitrary. It stands on a site known as “Am heiligen Grab” or “At the Holy Sepulchre”. This place held significance long before the statue arrived, tied to a local legend recounted by the village forester. The legend speaks of a Roisdorf resident burdened by a grave sin. Absolved by his confessor, he was tasked with daily prayers at an eastward-facing grave he dug in the woods. This act of penance drew the attention of other villagers who joined him in prayer, turning the site into a place of communal reflection. The Christusstatue now stands as a modern embodiment of this spiritual tradition. Two inscription stones flank the statue, added by Maucher in 1956. They bear poignant messages: “True justice judges quite differently than all people. Therefore, do not judge!” and “For the judgment of all people is wrong or evil.” These inscriptions encourage introspection and warn against the dangers of judgment. The Christusstatue in Alfter offers more than just a visual spectacle. It’s a powerful narrative woven into the fabric of local history and belief.
