Nestled near the sprawling greenery of Richmond Park sits Christ’s Church of England Comprehensive Secondary School. Don’t let the unassuming exterior fool you. This school, the only Church of England secondary school in Richmond upon Thames, holds a rich history and boasts impressive academic achievements. Christ’s Church of England Comprehensive Secondary School, established in 1713, traces its roots back even further to 1658 when John Frederick Bentley proposed building a school. Originally located at the intersection of George Street and Brewer’s Lane, adjacent to St Mary Magdalene Church, the school was known as a “bluecoat school” due to the pupils’ blue gowns. This tradition continues today with the school’s blue blazers. In 1854, the school relocated to a larger building, and then again in 1960 to its current location. It was then known as St Mary Magdalene Church of England School. In 1978, it merged with St Edward the Confessor RC School, becoming Christ’s School, one of the first ecumenical schools in England. The Roman Catholic Church withdrew from the partnership in 1997, returning Christ’s School to its Church of England roots. Christ’s Church of England Comprehensive Secondary School underwent significant renovations in 2000, including the addition of art rooms, science labs, and a sports hall. The school has a student population of around 670 pupils aged 11 to 19. They benefit from a pupil-to-teacher ratio that ranks in the top 33% nationwide. The school prides itself on its academic achievements, placing in the top 15% for university admissions and the top 16% for A-level value-added scores. Among its notable alumni are professional footballers, a professor at the University of Nottingham, and Grammy Award-winning artist Estelle Swaray. Marshgate Primary School and The Queen’s Church of England Primary School are among the main feeder schools, each contributing about 10% of the student population. So, as you stand before Christ’s Church of England Comprehensive Secondary School, remember, it’s not just a building. It’s a place where history, education, and a vibrant community intertwine.
