“Christopher Cass, Master Mason” he proudly proclaims from his grand tomb. You’ll find the Christopher Cass tomb Cenotaph tucked away in St. John’s Burial Ground. Christopher Cass was no ordinary mason. He was a master of granite, a rarity in the early 18th century. His expertise earned him the prestigious title of His Majesty’s Master Mason to the Board of Ordnance. Imagine the responsibility of shaping the very foundations of London. Christopher Cass did just that. He was instrumental in laying out Hanover Square, a testament to his skill and vision. Though his work on fortifications and churches is impressive, it’s his mastery of granite that sets him apart. Sadly, there are no known surviving portraits of this extraordinary man. Yet, here at the Christopher Cass tomb Cenotaph, his legacy lives on, etched in stone for all to admire.
