Who built Christiansholm Slot? The merchant Just Fabritius built this magnificent estate. That was back in 1746. Christiansholm Slot stands proudly near Klampenborg. It’s about ten kilometers north of central Copenhagen. The current owner is the businessman Fritz Schur. He plans to make it an artist’s retreat someday.
Christiansholm Slot has a rich history. It wasn’t always the grand house we see today. Historiographer Royal Vitus Bering had a modest country house here. He named it Christians Holm in 1670. It was one of the earliest country houses in Denmark. This original building wasn’t nearly as impressive as what replaced it. After Bering died the estate went back to the crown.
Then came Just Fabritius. He built the stunning new house we see elements of today. The architect might have been Johan Christian Conradi. Conradi also worked on Fabritius’s Copenhagen townhouse. Fabritius owned Christiansholm until 1763. It passed through several hands. Christopher MacEvoy Sr. a wealthy planter and merchant owned it for a time. Later Ernst Heinrich von Schimmelmann acquired the property. He even let Adam Oehlenschläger use it as a summer retreat.
Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsøe bought Christiansholm Slot in 1863. He was an important figure. He headed the Royal Danish Theatre. The estate changed hands again. Count Gustav Adolph Clauson-Kaas and Baron Lerche purchased it in 1900. They created the English Villa Quarter nearby. That’s a development of terraced houses designed by architect Tasmus Jensen. The main house was sold to Count Carl Moltke in 1914.
Christiansholm Slot underwent a major restoration between 1988 and 1990. Architect Ulrich Schirnig oversaw the project. The work preserved this significant piece of Danish history. Today Christiansholm Slot awaits its next chapter. It will hopefully soon become the haven for Nordic artists Fritz Schur envisioned. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of this unique building.
