Picture the imposing structure of Christians Temple Church. It stands tall a testament to faith perseverance and community. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living history book. Christians Temple Church’s story began with the Great Migration. African Americans sought better opportunities in Chicago. Among them was Brother Elliot T Johnson from Mississippi. He couldn’t find a Church of Christ Holiness church. So he started a prayer meeting and Bible study. This small group laid the foundation for what Christians Temple Church would become.

In 1917 Reverend C E Owens arrived from Mississippi. He joined Brother Johnson’s group. Services began in a Methodist mission. Thirty members formed the core of Christians Temple Church. They moved several times outgrowing each location. Their dedication grew with each move. They finally settled at 552 E 44th Street. This wasn’t just a building. It was a symbol of their unwavering faith.

The church faced many challenges. Financial difficulties were one. They persevered overcoming debts. Through the years various pastors served. Each contributed to the church’s growth and development. Bishop M R Conic implemented an innovative approach. He secured interest-free loans from members. This significantly reduced debt. It also fostered a stronger sense of community within the church.

In 1972 Christians Temple Church moved again. This time to its present location at 62 West 111th Place. The new building was even larger. It featured an educational wing and a large multipurpose room. Each room had its own piano. This space was perfect for their expanding ministries. Once again community support was crucial. Members provided interest-free loans. This saved the church significant money.

Bishop O W McInnis led the church during this time. He established a food and clothing bank. He also started GED classes and a daycare. He mentored aspiring ministers impacting countless lives. Bishop Emery Lindsay continued this legacy. He expanded the church’s outreach programs. He initiated a breakfast ministry. This offered both physical and spiritual nourishment.

Today Christians Temple Church remains a vibrant force in the community. It continues its mission. It serves the Roseland neighborhood. From humble beginnings to its current standing Christians Temple Church is a remarkable story. It’s a story of faith resilience and unwavering commitment to serving God and the community. It’s a living legacy a testament to the power of faith. It’s a legacy you can feel as you stand here today.
