In 1953, a man named W. T. Smith experienced a profound spiritual awakening. This pivotal moment occurred on the Saturday before Easter, under the guidance of Evangelist G.E. Joubert Smith. This event ignited a fire within him, leading him to establish the Christian Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in Dallas. Smith began his ministry humbly, in a former cafe. Armed with his Bible and a guitar, he sang, played, and shared scripture. The second week, his mother Rosie Lee Mack joined him, followed by his sister-in-law, Pastor Alma Williams. His wife, Earnestine, joined shortly after, having just given birth to their son, Vernon. The Christian Holy Temple Church of God in Christ started with just two members, a handicapped woman and a widow with seven children. Despite the challenging circumstances, including a leaky roof, snakes, and outdoor facilities, the small congregation persevered. They faced numerous obstacles, including a disruptive incident with a drunk man and a near-miss rattlesnake bite. Smith himself underwent back surgery, forcing the church to close for six months. Upon his release, a chance encounter with a woman who offered her house for services reignited the flame. The Christian Holy Temple Church of God in Christ reopened with just two members. One passed away shortly after, leaving Smith discouraged. But he pressed on, fueled by a divine message to keep the faith. The church began to flourish. Offerings increased dramatically, a testament to the growing congregation. In 1963, the decision was made to purchase property. Despite a setback with stolen funds, the church acquired land and erected a building in 1964. In 1983, the thriving Christian Holy Temple Church of God in Christ underwent renovations. They even launched a radio broadcast on KSKY, further expanding their reach. Over time, the church experienced both growth and change. Some members passed away, others started their own churches. In 2005, due to Smith’s declining health, leadership passed to his son, Titus. Bishop W.T. Smith passed away in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of faith and perseverance.
