Lost in the City’s embrace Christchurch Greyfriars Church Garden beckons. A tranquil oasis it stands amidst London’s bustling heart. Its history whispers tales of faith and destruction.

Christchurch Greyfriars wasn’t always a garden. It began as a Franciscan monastery in 1225. Greyfriars refers to the grey habits worn by Franciscan friars. The original church was enormous the second largest in medieval London. Queens walked its hallowed halls. Queens Eleanor Margaret Isabella and Joan found their final resting place here. Their tombs sadly were destroyed.

The Great Fire of 1666 consumed the first church. Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt it. His magnificent baroque design stood for centuries. It was a place of learning and worship. The Lord Mayor attended annual sermons. Famous musicians played its organ including Felix Mendelssohn.

Tragedy struck again in 1940. Incendiary bombs destroyed much of Wren’s masterpiece during the Blitz. Only the west tower survived. The church was not rebuilt.

Today Christchurch Greyfriars exists as a poignant memorial. The garden reflects the floor plan of the original church. Box-edged beds mark pew locations. Wooden towers represent stone columns. A peaceful place it now is a testament to London’s resilient spirit. Here history and nature intertwine. Here ghosts of queens and friars still linger. Come sit awhile and contemplate the passage of time.
