Built in 1928 Christ the King Roman Catholic Church stands tall. It’s a testament to faith resilience and community spirit. This magnificent building hasn’t had an easy journey.

Christ the King Roman Catholic Church wasn’t always known by that name. It began life as St Clara Parish in 1894 serving a primarily German community in Woodlawn. Its construction a massive undertaking cost the equivalent of $7 million in 2016. Henry Schlacks a notable architect designed the Renaissance Revival style structure. The church even served as the National Shrine to Therese of Lisieux after her 1925 canonization.

The story of Christ the King Roman Catholic Church is one of dramatic shifts. Woodlawn’s demographics changed dramatically after Hansberry v Lee. The neighborhood became predominantly African American. The church adapted its name changing to St Clara-St Cyril in 1969 reflecting a parish merger. Another fire in 1976 devastated the interior. The church struggled. A further merger in 1990 led to its renaming as St Gelasius.

By 2002 weekly attendance had dwindled. The church faced demolition. The Woodlawn community however rallied. They successfully petitioned for landmark status saving the building in 2004. The Archdiocese invited the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest to take over. They established the Shrine of Christ the King.

Sadly another fire struck in 2015 destroying much of the interior renovations. The church was again in danger of demolition. But the community’s dedication persevered. They raised over half a million dollars for restoration. The Archdiocese eventually gave the church to the Institute. William Heyer another notable architect was hired for the restoration. The new design will emphasize the high altar with an image of the Infant Christ the King. Side shrines will honor various saints and biblical events.

Today Christ the King Roman Catholic Church continues its restoration. It is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of enduring faith resilience and the unwavering spirit of a community determined to preserve its history. This church has faced immense challenges and yet it stands tall a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring strength of faith.
