“Dedicated to Christ the King.” This declaration echoes through the very stones of the Christ the King Chapel. It stands here in London as a testament to faith and architectural ambition.

Welcome. We are now standing before the Christ the King Chapel. This Grade I listed building has a rich history. It is more than just a church. It is a landmark with layers of stories.

Originally known as the Central Church of the Catholic Apostolic Church, its story began in 1853. Designed by John Raphael Brandon, the church was intended to be a grand statement of faith. Construction started in 1850 and took several years. The foundation stone was laid on 27 June 1851.

Brandon’s design drew inspiration from 13th and 15th-century Gothic styles. The church’s cruciform plan features a nave, side aisles, and a sanctuary. The structure is built of Bath stone with a tiled roof. Look up to see the incomplete west side. It was never finished, remaining in brick. The planned facade was never realised. A crossing tower with a 150 ft spire was also envisioned but never completed.

Inside the Christ the King Chapel, the nave is impressive. It almost reaches the height of Westminster Abbey. A timber hammer beam roof adorned with angels stretches above. Sunlight streams through the lancet windows. These windows illuminate the double-arcaded triforium.

The south transept holds the most remarkable windows. These feature Christ in Majesty. Ranks of saints, apostles, and angels surround him. Below, earth is depicted in vibrant detail. The rose window above contains a dove surrounded by musician angels.

The sanctuary has stone rib-vaulting. Foliated bosses decorate the ceiling. A sanctuary lamp designed by Augustus Pugin adds to the sacred atmosphere. Beyond the sanctuary lies the Lady Chapel, formerly the English Chapel.

The English Chapel is separated by a screen behind the high altar. The chapel has a painted timber roof and stone angels. Arcaded lancet windows pierce the east facade.

From 1963 to 1994, the Christ the King Chapel served as the University Church. It became a worship center for students in the area. Music played a central role in these services.

Today, the Christ the King Chapel continues to serve the community. Euston Church, an Anglican church plant, now meets here. The English Chapel is used by Forward in Faith for weekday services. Mass is celebrated here.

Take a moment to appreciate the organ. It was erected in 1853 by Gray and Davison. It has three manuals and many stops. Edmund Hart Turpin was one of the first organists.

The Christ the King Chapel is a place of worship. It is also a testament to architectural vision. Its history is interwoven with faith and community. As we conclude our visit, remember the echoes of its past. Think about its enduring presence.
