“Established in 1936 during the Great Depression” rings through the history of Christ the King Catholic Church. This parish has been an integral part of Chicago’s Beverly Hills neighborhood for almost a century. Generations of families have worshiped here. They have also educated their children at its school.

Christ the King was the 89th parish. George Cardinal Mundelein created it. It was made to accommodate the growing Catholic population in Chicago. The church opened its doors with a shortage of resources. Father Patrick J. Gleeson was the first pastor. He served without a salary during that time. The first daily masses were at Little Company of Mary Hospital’s chapel. Sunday masses were at Vanderpoel School auditorium.

In 1937, construction finished on a combination church and school building. The parish began to thrive. A convent was added in 1940. The Sisters of Mercy served as teachers in the school. By the early 1950s, the Christ the King community had outgrown its original building. They needed a new rectory, church, and more school space. They built these during that decade.

Tradition is a key element here. Shared experiences and collective memories define Christ the King School and Parish. The parish celebrated its 80th anniversary in September 2016. Bishop Jerry Kicanas celebrated a special Mass. They honored the Sisters of Mercy, the school’s founding teachers. Allan Dressel was also honored. He was a beloved teacher, coach, parent, and alumnus.

Christ the King is a diverse community. It is in the heart of Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood. It is proud of its varied ethnic backgrounds. Strong bonds connect generations here. They are people of deep Catholic faith and solid Christian values.

Today, the Christ the King school serves over 370 children. They are dedicated to providing education of the highest quality. They guide these children to be faith-filled and considerate young adults. Students forge unique bonds within these halls. Many alumni maintain lifelong friendships. They also have deep ties to the Beverly/Morgan Park community. Many people who are no longer in Chicago still call Christ the King their “home” parish.

The Christ the King School community has 4,447 graduates. Many live and work around the world. Each has a story to tell.

Today, the parish and school continue to flourish. The PreK–8 school completed a large capital campaign called CK 2050. This raised funds to update classrooms, enhance security, and increase capacity. Christ the King stands as a testament to faith and community. It has thrived for nearly a century. It continues to serve its members and surrounding areas.
