First Church of Christ, Scientist in Austin began in the early 1900s. Though interest stirred earlier, it wasn’t until April 27, 1914, that it officially formed. They first met at the Austin Masonic Temple. The first service was held on May 3, 1914.
This church is part of a larger movement. Mary Baker Eddy discovered Christian Science in 1866. She believed understanding our relationship with God could heal. Many people have found healing through this science of Christianity. It is a reliable way of understanding Christianity.
Today, First Church of Christ, Scientist continues to serve the Austin area. You can find the church at 1309 Guadalupe Street. Sunday services are held at 11:00 am. Wednesday meetings take place at 12:00 and 7:30 pm.
There’s also a Christian Science Reading Room nearby. It’s located at 7739 Northcross Drive, #T. The Reading Room is open Monday through Friday. It is also open the second Saturday of each month. Hours are from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Besides First Church, there are other Christian Science churches in the area. Third Church of Christ, Scientist is located at 3575 RR 620 South. Lago Vista Society is in Lago Vista. Georgetown Society meets in Georgetown. Each offers its own services and meeting times.
Christian Science churches are dedicated only when debt-free. In 1943, Fifteenth Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, held three dedicatory services. The structure was built in three stages, without debt.
