In 1944, a religious canvass of South Austin revealed a void. There were no Missouri Synod Lutheran Churches in the area. This realization sparked the genesis of Christ Lutheran Church. The Texas District Mission Board secured the property at 300 E. Monroe Street in the autumn of 1945, laying the foundation for this community cornerstone. Christ Lutheran Church welcomed its first pastor in March 1946. The first service followed soon after, on May 5, 1946. The congregation formally adopted its constitution on December 4, 1946, solidifying its presence in Austin. A year later, on December 7, 1947, the ground was broken for the first sanctuary. This initial sanctuary, completed in 1948 and dedicated on May 23rd, cost $21,313. Christ Lutheran Church continued to evolve alongside its growing community. In 1985, a new sanctuary was built. This modern structure, designed by a church member, stands as the current home for worship. Christ Lutheran Church has served a diverse community throughout its history. People from various backgrounds find common ground in their shared faith. The church remains committed to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, a constant through its past, present, and future. From its humble beginnings to its modern presence, Christ Lutheran Church has remained a steadfast beacon of faith in Austin. The church’s commitment to its community has shaped its identity for over 75 years. This enduring commitment continues to guide Christ Lutheran Church as it looks towards the future.
