“A portable chapel?” a young boy whispered to his mother, tugging at her hand as they approached the imposing structure of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. It was hard to imagine this grand building as anything less. Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church stands proudly at the corner of Wilson and Spaulding Avenues. Its history is a testament to the community’s dedication and growth. The congregation’s story began in 1911, not here, but with a portable chapel at Eastwood and Spaulding. The first service was held on January 22, 1911. Imagine the scene: a small, dedicated group gathered for worship, their voices echoing in the temporary space. This humble beginning foreshadowed the church’s future expansion. By October 1912, the congregation had outgrown its portable home. They selected the current site and started building in 1913. The permanent church building was dedicated on April 12, 1914. This marked a significant milestone in the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church’s journey. The church continued to grow. A parish house was added in 1922. A new sanctuary followed in 1923-24, dedicated on April 27, 1924. The original 1914 structure then served as a chapel and gymnasium. Today, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church remains a vibrant part of the community. It stands as a symbol of the enduring power of faith and the growth of a congregation from humble beginnings to a prominent presence in the Albany Park district.
