Whispers of history echo from Christ Church Primary School. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place where centuries intertwine. A place of learning built upon layers of stories. Christ Church Primary School’s roots stretch back to 1708. That’s when a charity school first opened its doors in this very parish.

Imagine thirty children. Then seventy. A small community growing. By 1782 a dedicated schoolhouse was needed. A fund of 700 pounds was miraculously raised. A faculty was obtained to build near the churchyard. Children between eight and ten years of age were admitted. There was no charge. The school provided housing for the teachers.

Fast forward to September 16 1817. A National School sprang up. It was temporary in Wheler Street. However the next year things changed. The Duke of York himself laid the cornerstone for a permanent building. This new school opened on July 2 1820. It was the Spitalfields National School. Its purpose was to educate the poor. It was meant to be a place where everyone regardless of their background would be welcomed.

Commercial Street’s construction brought change. The old Charity School had to be relocated. In 1869 a new school was planned at the east end of the churchyard. Funds from the old school and the National School made this project possible. The construction cost a staggering 5953 pounds. The building had to be on arches. This was to avoid disturbing the graves in the churchyard. Construction began in 1873. The architects were James Tolley and Daniel Robert Dale. Christopher Forrest was the builder.

Finally the new school was complete in 1874. The Quaker Street National School closed its doors forever. The building from that time still stands today. This very spot you are standing on. Christ Church Primary School is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the commitment of countless individuals who believed in the power of education. It continues to serve the community it was founded to help. It is a vibrant heart of Spitalfields. It is a place of learning and growth. A place where history lives on.
