Christ Church is an evangelical church in the suburb of New Malden, London, part of the Church of England. It was founded in 1866, and its history is rich with stories of community, faith, and even a bit of controversy. The church’s story begins with a man named Charles Stirling, an evangelical Christian who saw the need for a church in the rapidly growing town of New Malden. In the 1850s, New Malden was experiencing a population boom and the need for a place of worship was becoming apparent. One man, Henry Thomas Dobson, even clashed with the local MP, Henry Drummond, over the necessity for a church. Stirling, a man of vision and determination, proposed the construction of Christ Church, and it was eventually built, thanks in part to a generous donation of land from Prince George, Duke of Cambridge. The church was consecrated in a grand ceremony on December 3rd, 1866, and Stirling was appointed as the first vicar of Christ Church, the church that still stands proudly today, a testament to the dedication of those who came before.
