Celebrating over a century of faith, Christ Church Lutheran stands as a beacon in San Francisco’s Sunset District. Founded in 1912, Christ Church Lutheran has evolved. It has grown while staying rooted in its commitment to serving its community. The church started in September 1912.
Christ Church Lutheran has occupied two buildings. It has belonged to three Lutheran denominations. These are LC-MS, AELC, and ELCA. It has been guided by four senior pastors.
Inside Christ Church Lutheran, music fills the air. The beautiful Bosch organ creates an atmosphere of reverence. Built in 1967 in Germany, the organ found its home here after Lone Mountain College closed. Its journey to Christ Church Lutheran involved careful redesign and installation. This ensured it resonated perfectly within the sanctuary. The organ boasts 1,597 pipes.
Christ Church Lutheran’s building has a large sanctuary. It also features a parish hall with a kitchen and a central courtyard. The sanctuary and parish hall each seat about 150 people. The building includes offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, and an outdoor meditation garden.
The All Saints Day worship service is a highlight. Parishioners bring pictures of loved ones. They place them on a memorial table. This act honors those who have passed.
