“A masterpiece without precedent.” That’s how many describe Christ Church Lutheran right here in Minneapolis. Eliel Saarinen, a leading modernist architect, created this serene space.

Christ Church Lutheran is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith and architectural innovation. The congregation was established in 1911. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2009.

Now, look closely at the building. It may seem like a simple oblong box. But the walls are not parallel. The back wall gently curves. This intentional design enhances the acoustics. Noted conductor Osmo Vänskä praised the church. He said its acoustics are good for music. It’s a great venue for concerts.

The story of Christ Church Lutheran began with a problem. The congregation’s original plans for a Gothic Revival building were too expensive. In 1946, Reverend William A. Buege contacted Eliel Saarinen. Saarinen designed the First Christian Church in Columbus, Indiana. Reverend Buege convinced him to take on the commission.

Eliel Saarinen’s son, Eero, also left his mark here. He designed the education wing. It was completed in 1962. Eero’s design complements his father’s work. Both father and son completed their last building with Christ Church Lutheran.

Christ Church Lutheran received the American Institute of Architects Twenty-Five Year Award in 1977. It was honored above Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House. The award recognizes enduring architectural significance.

Take a moment to appreciate the details. William M. McVey designed the sculptured stone panels. They add to the church’s artistic beauty. In 2018, a new pipe organ was installed. Dobson Pipe Organ Builders of Lake City, Iowa built it.

Notice the tower to the south. A passageway connects it to the church. The International Style worship building was dedicated in 1949. It quickly became known as an architectural masterpiece. The design inspired countless modern churches in the 1950s and 1960s.

Eliel Saarinen once said that if a building is honest, the architecture is religious. Christ Church Lutheran embodies this philosophy. Its design reflects a commitment to both function and beauty.

Free architecture tours are available. They take place on the second Sunday of each month at 11:00 a.m. Trained docents from the Friends of Christ Church Lutheran lead the tours. Larger groups can arrange tours with prior consultation.

Christ Church Lutheran stands as a symbol. It represents architectural excellence and spiritual devotion. Its influence has been felt across the nation. It is a treasure for both its congregation and the wider community.
