Mary Attenborough’s vision comes to life right here at Christ Church Dingley. Can you imagine, in 1873, this beautiful church was dedicated, marking the culmination of her dream? Mary, along with her brother Thomas, arrived in Australia in 1853 from Dingley, Northamptonshire, England. A devout Christian, she was known for her generosity towards those in need. She held regular prayer meetings with friends in a simple “Prayer Shed”. It was this spirit of faith and service that led her to envision a dedicated space for worship and ministry. Christ Church Dingley became that vision realized. A memorial tablet on the west wall commemorates her uncle, Robert Attenborough, in whose memory Mary built this church. It reads, “In memory of Robert Attenborough, of Braybrooke, Northhamptonshire, England, this church is erected by his grateful niece, A.D. 1873”. Step inside, and you’ll find beautiful stained glass windows, many of which serve as memorials to the Attenborough family. These windows depict Mary’s compassion, showing her caring for the sick and poor, always grounded in her faith. Christ Church Dingley stands today, a testament to Mary’s legacy of faith, community, and service.
