“A church born from resilience,” you might think, gazing at Christ Church of Chicago. Indeed, this vibrant community, nestled at 6047 N. Rockwell in West Rogers Park, embodies a spirit of perseverance. Christ Church of Chicago began its journey in 1948. A group of Japanese-Americans, many having just left internment camps, sought solace and community. They started worshipping together, establishing the first Christ Church of Chicago. Initially, they gathered in various locations. In 1954, they secured a permanent home on Buckingham Place. It was a bustling hub for three generations, a testament to the enduring strength of the Japanese-American spirit in Chicago. However, time brought its challenges. By 1987, dwindling numbers and a decaying structure necessitated a move. Christ Church of Chicago seemed to be fading. But the spirit of the original founders remained strong. In 2000, like a phoenix from the ashes, Christ Church of Chicago was reborn at its current location. It blossomed anew. The former St. Mark’s Lutheran Church building provided a fresh canvas. Christ Church of Chicago began to paint a vibrant picture of diversity and inclusion. Today, Christ Church of Chicago honors its Japanese-American heritage with cultural events like the Aki Matsuri and Udon & Baked Goods sales. Yet, it also embraces the rich tapestry of its surrounding community. The church’s motto is to welcome all, regardless of where they are on their faith journey. Christ Church of Chicago is a true reflection of the diverse and welcoming spirit of Chicago. It’s a place where the past is honored and the future embraced, where resilience and faith create a vibrant tapestry of community.
