You’re standing in front of what was once a simple Mission Hall. It’s a place that has seen much transformation, much like the village itself. It started in the 1890s, when the land was still part of a sheep farming village. What a sight it must have been, with sheep grazing in the fields, and the air filled with the bleating of lost lambs. But times changed, and the old ‘Pound Field’, where lost sheep were brought for safety, was transformed into a place of faith.
This is ChristChurch Banstead, and you can’t help but feel its humble beginnings. It all started with four Christian businessmen from Sutton. They had a vision: to create a place for anyone seeking spiritual solace, a place where they could find comfort and a community.
A tin tabernacle (a temporary building made of corrugated iron sheets) was erected, a symbol of the early Christians’ resilience. The church grew, and the tin tabernacle became a symbol of hope. In 1960, they adopted the title Banstead Baptist Church, but they always retained their original covenant obligations. It wasn’t until 2013 that the church was rededicated to God and given a new name, ChristChurch Banstead.
It still stands, a beacon of hope in the heart of Banstead, a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. Now, stepping inside, you’re welcomed by the warm embrace of a place where you truly belong.
