Wondering about the tales whispered by ancient stones? Today we explore Chiswick Parish Church. This Grade II listed Anglican church stands near the River Thames. Old Chiswick grew around it from around 1181.

Chiswick Parish Church has a rich history dating back centuries. A church has stood on this site since at least 1181 in Norman times. A senior clergyman formally visited the church in 1252. An inventory was made at this unusually early date. The inventory listed items like missals chalices and vestments.

Over the years Chiswick Parish Church has seen many changes. The current building dates from 1882 to 1884. Most of the church was demolished and rebuilt. Only the tower remained from the earlier structure. Brewer Henry Smith paid for the rebuild. He was from the nearby Fuller Smith and Turner brewery.

The tower of Chiswick Parish Church was built between 1416 and 1435. William Bordall was vicar at that time. Architect John Loughborough Pearson designed the rebuilt church. He made the nave short but wide. This was due to the small distance between the tower and the road. The Duke of Devonshire also contributed to the rebuilding costs.

Inside Chiswick Parish Church several monuments have survived. These are mainly located in the tower. One notable monument is to Sir Thomas Chaloner. He died in 1615. The monument also commemorates his two wives.

The churchyard of Chiswick Parish Church contains more interesting monuments. Italian poet Ugo Foscolo is memorialized here. His remains were returned to Italy. The Italian government added an inscription to the monument. Painter William Hogarth also has a monument near the church. Actor David Garrick wrote its epitaph. Frederick Hitch is buried here. He was a Victoria Cross recipient. He fought in the Battle of Rorke’s Drift.

Mary Cromwell is buried in Chiswick Parish Church. She was the daughter of Oliver Cromwell. Field Marshal Montgomery married Betty Carver here in 1927.

The architecture of Chiswick Parish Church is notable. It is built of Kentish ragstone masonry. The style is Perpendicular. The roof is made of copper. Surviving 15th-century features include the tall archway to the west tower. The hood-mould over the west door window is also original.

Monuments inside Chiswick Parish Church include memorials to Ralph Wenwood and Charlotte Seymour. There are also memorials to Thomas Bentley and Richard Taylor. These monuments showcase various artistic styles. Sculptors like Thomas Scheemakers and William Tyler created some of them.

In the churchyard the monument to Percy Harris is Grade II listed. Edward Bainbridge Copnall created the relief carving. It depicts the resurrection of the dead. James Abbott McNeill Whistler is also buried here. His tomb is a classical design in bronze.

Chiswick Parish Church stands as a testament to history. It blends Norman origins with Victorian rebuilding. Its monuments tell stories of notable people. Their lives shaped Chiswick and beyond. The church’s blend of architectural styles and artistic treasures makes it special. It connects us to the past.
