How much did it cost to remember? We are standing before the Chislehurst War Memorial. It serves as a solemn reminder of the human cost of war. The Chislehurst War Memorial was unveiled on 17 October 1920. It was designed by the renowned architect Sir Reginald Blomfield. He was known for his work on war memorials and cemeteries. The memorial features a towering Cross of Sacrifice, a design that has become synonymous with remembrance. The cross is crafted from Portland stone. It stands atop a multi-tiered octagonal plinth. The names of 186 local men who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War are etched on the plinth. Later, 65 more names were added to commemorate those lost in the Second World War. Sadly, two families, the Birketts and Edlmanns, were deeply affected by the conflict. Both lost sons in the First World War. The memorial cost £1,068 6s 10d to build. It was funded by public subscriptions and the remaining funds from the local Peace celebrations. The Chislehurst War Memorial stands as a poignant testament to the enduring impact of conflict on this community. It’s a place where we can reflect on the sacrifices made and honor the memory of those who gave their lives for their country.
