Chislehurst School for Girls started as Sidcup High School in 1896. It was initially a co-educational school. You could find it on the corner of Victoria Road. The school evolved. It became Sidcup County School for Girls. A new main school building was built in 1931. The site expanded twice in the 1950s.
After World War II, it was renamed Chislehurst and Sidcup County Grammar School for Girls. Later, it became Chislehurst and Sidcup Girls’ Grammar School. CSGGS were the initials on the blazer badge. The boys’ counterpart was Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School. That school moved to the London Borough of Bexley. It became a coeducational selective academy.
This school was on Beaverwood Road. So the beaver became its symbol. It represented industry. It was on the prefects’ badges. In 1968, the school was renamed Beaverwood School for Girls.
The school transitioned from a grammar school to a comprehensive school in 1982. Chislehurst School for Girls gained academy status on March 1 2011. Beaverwood changed its name in September 2014. It became Chislehurst School for Girls.
Inside are four houses. They are Angelou Cabrera Turing and Yousafzai. They are paired with charities. The houses fundraise. More money means more house points.
Many notable women attended this school. Danielle Murphy played football here. Dionne Bromfield became a singer. Debbie Young is now an author. Lindsey Bareham became a cookery writer. Margaret Gelling was a toponymist. Lynne Miller is an actress. Betty Moys created the Moys Classification Scheme of legal literature.
Chislehurst School for Girls is a place of learning. It serves girls aged 11 to 18. The sixth form is co-educational. Boys aged 16 to 18 are welcome. Mrs Maria French is the headteacher. The school motto is Altiora Sequamur. It means “We seek higher things.” The school colors are navy blue green and black.
