How about stepping into a realm of serenity? This is the National Memorial Chorten. Many call it Thimphu Chorten. Some also call it just Memorial Chorten. It stands as one of Thimphu’s most iconic religious landmarks.

Built in 1974, this magnificent stupa commemorates the third Dragon King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. He is known as the father of modern Bhutan. His portrait in ceremonial dress is displayed inside.

Did you know that this chorten is unique? Unlike other stupas, it doesn’t enshrine any remains of saints. The King wanted to build a chorten representing the mind of Buddha.

The Chorten’s architecture is striking. It has whitewashed walls and golden annexes. The design is based on a classical stupa. It features a pyramidal pillar crowned by a crescent moon and sun. Its vase-like shape is a distinct feature.

As you approach the National Memorial Chorten, notice the three slate carvings at the gate. They represent Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, and Vajrapani. These are symbols of compassion, knowledge, and power.

Inside, you’ll discover richly carved annexes. They face the four directions. Mandalas, statues, and a shrine dedicated to the third king adorn the space. The ground floor is dedicated to the teachings of the deity Phurpha.

Take your time to circumambulate the prayer wheels. Many elderly Bhutanese come here daily. They spin the large red prayer wheels. They offer their prayers at the shrine.

The National Memorial Chorten has four entrances. However, only one is open for devotees. The other floors are dedicated to different teachings. The top floor showcases paintings of Nyingma deities. You can also enjoy panoramic views of Thimphu from the gallery.

The serene ambiance here is palpable. You can easily spend hours learning. You will learn about the lifework of Jigme Signe Wangchuck. The monuments of Tantric Buddhism are on the topmost hall.

The National Memorial Chorten is more than just a monument. It is a living testament to Bhutanese culture. It embodies spirituality and devotion. Take a moment to soak it all in. This is a place to learn, reflect, and find peace. Remember the serene ambiance. Remember the intricate details. Carry the spirit of the National Memorial Chorten with you.
