Opened in 1938 Chingford Foundation School wasn’t always located in Nevin Drive. Initially housed in temporary premises at Hawkwood House it served as Chingford County High School. The Second World War disrupted things. Evacuated west it didn’t find its permanent home until 1941. Can you imagine the challenges faced?

Chingford Foundation School has a rich history. It started as a county high school. It then became Chingford Senior High School adopting a comprehensive system. Students aged 11 to 14 attended a separate junior high school. They later joined for O levels and GCSEs. The sixth form was abolished then reinstated. A new centre opened in 1997.

In 2000 the school became a foundation school. This gave it more autonomy in admissions. Extensive building works between 2006 and 2007 added a new sports hall and staff room. Becoming an academy in 2012 marked another milestone. Now run by the Chingford Academies Trust it shares management with South Chingford Foundation School. Rob Mammen leads both schools currently. Gary Haines is the headteacher.

The school has seen its share of Ofsted inspections. Rated ‘Good’ in 2014 it later required improvement in 2019. A ‘Good’ rating returned in 2023. Chingford Foundation School boasts notable alumni. Among them are the famous footballer Harry Kane and the acclaimed designer Sir Jonathan Ive. Many successful people owe their foundations to this school.

Chingford Foundation School’s journey is one of adaptation. It reflects the changing educational landscape. The school has consistently provided education for its community.
