The Chinese Bible Church emerged from a vibrant history. It is rooted in the 19th-century missionary efforts. In November 1847 the Shanghai Baptist Church was organized. It was also known as Old North Gate Church. The church sat across from the North Gate of the Chinese city.
Matthew Tyson and Eliza Yates were the first Southern Baptist missionaries to Shanghai. They arrived just two years after the SBC was organized in Georgia USA. The first meeting was held in J.L. Shuck’s house. Shuck already had years of experience in Hong Kong and Guangzhou.
The purpose of the gathering was to organize a church. Rev. J. Lewis Shuck Elvia Gable Shuck Rev. Matthew Tyson Yates and others were present. Shuck was elected moderator and pastor. Yates was secretary. Rev. Toby his wife and Mr. Yang were elected deacons.
The church was small but it grew. It became a ministry of hope for the Chinese population. At the time the only other church was the colonial Anglican church. It primarily ministered to the British and foreigners.
During the American Civil War getting funds to China missionaries was hard. Yates worked as a translator and lawyer for the British colonists.
In the late 1950s the new Communist government closed the church. In 1979 Bishop K. H. Ting and Shanghai pastors asked the government to reopen churches. Some 20 Shanghai churches regained their buildings. The Grace Baptist Church was one of them. The Old North Gate Church had become a school. The government felt a school was more important than a church at that location.
In the 1980s visitors were allowed inside the auditorium. An elderly man shared he had been baptized there. The baptism pool was under the pulpit. It was a common practice but it was not being used.
The Chinese Bible Church stands as a symbol. It represents resilience and faith for Shanghai Christians. It shows the dedication to spreading the Gospel.
