Back in 1990 Chinatown Point opened its doors. It quickly became a popular shopping destination. Shoppers loved its unique mix of curio shops, pawn shops, and jewelry stores. However, as newer malls emerged, Chinatown Point faced a decline in popularity.
But Chinatown Point’s story does not end there. In July 2010, Perennial Singapore Retail Management acquired the mall. They invested S90 million in a makeover. This renovation increased the retail floor area by 18 percent.
The architecture of Chinatown Point is quite interesting. Originally, it featured two spiraling podiums. One podium was transformed into a flat space. Now, it has a spiraling central atrium. Shoppers can easily walk from the top level to the first. A dome-shaped ceiling was installed in the atrium. Carpeting was added to some levels. A giant LED screen enhances the ambiance. Even the basement carpark was relocated to create more retail space. A pedestrian link to the Chinatown MRT station was built.
After the renovation, Chinatown Point welcomed new tenants. Anchor tenants like NTUC FairPrice, Daiso, and Uniqlo joined the mall. New restaurants such as Eat At Taipei and Din Tai Fung opened. More apparel and retail outlets came too.
Chinatown Point also houses a unique library. The National Library Board manages it. This library focuses on Chinese culture and history. It is Singapore’s first public library staffed almost entirely by volunteers. The library occupies 1000 square meters on the fourth floor.
Getting to Chinatown Point is easy. It is next to the Chinatown MRT station. You can reach it via the North East Line or the Downtown Line. Several bus lines also stop nearby.
