Originally opened in 1921 as the North Beach Branch Library it served a different neighborhood. Architect G Albert Lansburgh designed this Italian Renaissance beauty. It’s one of seven Carnegie libraries built in San Francisco. The Carnegie funds helped build many branch libraries across the city. This building however is significant because it received a large grant. This grant was $67600 a substantial sum at the time. The city itself covered extra costs for construction.

In 1958 the library’s name changed to better reflect the community it serves. Now known as the Chinatown Branch Library it expanded in 1991. Thanks to public and private funding it doubled in size. A community meeting room and a storytelling room were added. The renovated library reopened in 1996. This renovation made sure the building was safe during earthquakes.

The library holds over 90000 items. These include books periodicals newspapers and even audio and video materials. The Chinatown Him Mark Lai Branch Library boasts the largest public collection of Chinese language materials in Northern California. It also holds a significant number of English language books on Asian topics. This section is incredibly popular with the local community. There’s even a special section of Vietnamese materials.

Imagine children exploring its extensive collection of English and Chinese picture books. Visualize adults using the library’s computer lab. This lab contains software in English and Chinese. The staff too are bilingual. They are ready to help anyone who needs assistance. The library offers everything from tutoring areas to a roof garden.
