China Power International Changshu Power Plant

Can you hear the hum? It’s the heartbeat of China Power International Changshu Power Plant. This place, also known as Changshu-1 power station, isn’t just a power plant. It’s a story of growth, expansion, and the ever-evolving energy landscape of China. China Power International Changshu Power Plant began its life in 1993 with the activation of its first unit. Imagine the scene, a brand new facility humming with potential, ready to electrify the region. By 1994, two more units joined the ranks, each contributing 330 MW of power, using subcritical technology fueled by bituminous coal. The China Power International Changshu Power Plant grew again between 2005 and 2006. Three more units came online at the nearby Changshu-2 power station. These new units, each with a capacity of 650 MW, employed supercritical technology. The growth didn’t stop there. The Changshu-1 power station continued its evolution in 2012 and 2013 with the addition of two 1000 MW units, boasting ultra-supercritical technology. This brought the total capacity of Changshu-1 to a staggering 3320 MW. China Power International Changshu Power Plant continues to adapt and expand. In June 2023, a 3 x 660 MW expansion project was approved. This is part of a larger national energy strategy championed by President Xi, demonstrating the plant’s ongoing contribution to China’s energy future. The ownership history of China Power International Changshu Power Plant is also a testament to China’s evolving energy sector. Originally owned by CPI (China Power Investment Corporation), the plant became part of State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) in 2015 after a merger with State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC). Today, SPIC stands as one of China’s five largest state-owned electricity producers, and China Power International Changshu Power Plant plays a key role in its portfolio.
